MUFFO
100% Grechetto
Back in 1931 the agronomist Giorgio Garavini, an official of the Ministry of Agriculture delegated to define the boundaries of the area intended for the cultivation of Orvieto’s “typical wine”, already described the local wine:«the wine of Orvieto is famous for having cheered illustrious tables of Popes, Princes and Cardinals since ancient times. As the City of Orvieto was a Papal residence, frequent relations with Rome arose, so that barrels of the famous wine destined for eminent men often departed towards this City». In the description of the so-called “abboccato” Orvieto wine, he refers to the oenologists and experts of the time who «considered the Orvieto to be tastier than the Sauternes, since it lacked that sulfur flavor which is almost always found in the latter».
Sergio Mottura’s “Muffo” wine is part of the great tradition of Orvieto’s muffati wines. It does not have DOC stated on the label because this is not permitted by the production disciplinary, as the wine is produced from single-variety Grechetto grapes. Muffo comes from the noble mold which, like a painter, colors the Grechetto grapes gold, leaving them to dry gently in the autumn sun in Tuscia. It is a wine that tells of morning mists, sunny afternoons and that patient wait that only true wine artists understand and respect.
