LA TORRE E CIVITELLA
100% Grechetto
This is how Sergio Mottura talks about the birth of this wine: «In 1993 we (a group of 30 producers from all over the world, represented in Germany by the same importer) were in a floating restaurant on the Berlin canal to celebrate the eightieth birthday of Robert Mondavi. We decided to use the bottles opened during the afternoon tasting for the evening. So, during dinner, a bottle of my Grechetto “Poggio della Costa” 1992 happened to be on Louis Fabrice Latour’s table.
The next day, upon complimenting me on the quality of the wine, he asked me why I hadn’t tried aging it in wood; I replied that in reality the tests carried out had not given appreciable results. He kindly offered to give me some of his barriques already selected for white wines and, above all, to share with me the know-how to use them. His help was worth a generation of experience!»
The story took an unexpected turn in September 2020 when another French company, Chateau Latour – one of the five Grand Cru of Bordeaux – asked Mottura to renounce the use of the name “Latour” as it was their exclusive property. Respecting this request, from the 2021 harvest the wine has been renamed “La Torre a Civitella”, thus marking the beginning of a new chapter in the history of this prestigious label, continuing to celebrate the heritage and innovation in the heart of Tuscia. The dream of a life in the glass.
